about

The Mercury Tree is a progressive rock band out of Portland, OR. They released their most recent full-length album “Pterodactyls” in 2011 and are currently working on their follow-up album.

Starting off as Ben’s solo project in 2004, we became a full band in 2006 with the addition of Mike Byrne on drums, James Crutcher on bass, and Avery Cooper on guitar. We played for about two years and released a self-titled album in 2007. Mike and James later moved on to a new project called Moses, Smell The Roses, which released two great albums recorded and produced by Ben. Mike, a prodigiously talented drummer, later went on to play in Portland titans Bearcubbin’ and the reformed Smashing Pumpkins. In the meantime the Eerie EP was released in 2008, featuring a more electronically-influenced set of songs.
A new lineup convened after this, including Liz Kuhn on flute and Alan Johnson on bass. We recorded the Descent EP in 2009 which included guest drumming from Mike. Then new drummer Connor Reilly entered the picture in 2010, providing an awesome heavy prog influence. We released the album Pterodactyls in 2011 and played our first short tour of the West Coast to promote it. Pterodactyls was our most ambitious work to date, a concept album loosely based around dinosaurs. After three years in the band, Alan moved on to new projects in fall 2011, to be replaced by Aaron Clark on bass.

Our current evolution is leading us towards a more spacey, jam-oriented, shoegazey sound, with more use of live looping and keyboards. We are working on a set of new songs, of which Cipher is the latest to be released. Our new full-length album will be out in summer 2012.
