about

When Bert Dobben started playing the drums on June the 9th 1977, he immediately painted the name Peff on the front head of his bassdrum. A one man band was born! It was a title of Mike Ratledge composition which had appeared on the Soft Machine album Bundles. At that time, Peff just sounded like an absurd word (Dadaistic?) to the young drummer with obviously no meaning at all (you couldn’t find it in dictionary). It was only about twenty-five years later when Bert finally discovered that Peff appeared to be a girl’s name in English speaking habitats.

Bert Dobben and Otto Scheffer were both born in June 1961 and they first met in high-school 17 years later. They didn’t start playing together right away and even lost contact for about 30 years. But in 2008 their paths crossed again while both visiting a small jazz-festival (with a minimum amount of jazz in programming) in Emmen. Drinking beer and talking about mutual musical favorites, they decided to join forces and play some music themselves. They immediately knew they wanted to play improvisational music with influences drawn from jazz, western classical music, folk and progressive rock. Not very average stuff, certainly in the area where they were leaving.

Once a week, the lads came together in Bert’s small rented cottage in Weerdinge (soon to be baptized as Peff!!studio), where they just plugged in their instruments, started the tape and ran their musical course completely unprepared. The results were often disastrous – Dadaism that wouldn’t please even one single neighborhood anywhere on this planet! Sometimes it was nice and once in a while something really glued together. Part of those glue-some examples are now presented here for your listening pleasure.
