The first incarnation of phi (with Peter Leitner on bass guitar) existed from 2006 to 2008, playing at many small festivals and finally achieving success at several band contests.
In october 2008 the band won the first prize (Falco-Preis) at the Austrian finale of the podium.jazz.pop.rock contest, impressing the jury that consisted of known Austrian professional musicians. The scale of the band’s songs and performance was compared to the big Progressive Rock bands of the seventies, including Pink Floyd, Genesis and Yes.
The connections and the reputation of the band reached a new height, but still the time of this incarnation was over.
The remaining Nick Koch and Markus Bratusa spent the following year with re- and overthinking the concept of the band, further deepening the connections to the Viennese music scene, and finding new musicians for the band who share the love and the needed abilities and attitude for this special, difficult kind of rock music.
In february 2010 Arthur Darnhofer-Demàr and Christoph W. Pirker joined the band on bass and keyboards/synths – and thus the second incarnation of phi was born, hoping to energetically realize the band’s potential.
In early 2011 Christoph W. Pirker left the band, and phi became a rock-trio with sampled electronic-sounds, again, winning the 41th Newcomer Contest in Graz, and the Ost Rock Trophy in Fischamend.
At the same time the first full-length concept-album “For The Love Of Ghosts” was self-recorded, and -released in July 2011.
After about 35 live-shows this year, and very good album reviews in the international media, the band started to work on new material again, for both a new 22min EP (“The Deflowering Of Reality” has been released on March 17th 2012, via Office4Music) and a new album to be released later in 2012.
In February 2012, the russian prog-specialized label MALS Records showed interest in re-releasing “For The Love Of Ghosts” including international distribution, which is now planned for the near future.

We have now reached number 10 in the Progstravaganza series of compilations. And being that it is a jubilee edition, I decided to do something totally different. First of all, this compilation is uploaded to Prog Sphere's Bandcamp profile, which means that you can get it in high-quality audio. But that's not the greatest thing about this Progstravaganza.
As some of you, dear visitors of our websites, already know, I am running Prog Sphere Promotions, a boutique agency providing bands representation and public relations in the music industry. For this Progstravaganza, the decision was made to establish a totally new subsite (progstravaganza.prog-sphere.com) where all the bands/participants of the sampler would be presented through interviews, reviews, streams and special features during a period of 30 days. It also means that these bands will be presented on the websites of our partners as well in the way of reviews, interviews and radio airplays. Other methods include direct-to-fan approaches and social networking with the aim of building and expanding fanbases.
This would be the technical side of Progstravaganza X. Now speaking of the music, this sampler is mostly progressive rock/metal, but there are other genres represented as well, proving that Prog Sphere is about being diverse and progressive.
If you want to see what Progstravaganza X is all about, you might do one of the following (or all of them):
